While Romney tried to steer the conversation away from his unreleased tax returns the focus is now locked back on to them after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently accused Romney of not paying taxes for 10 years. While Romney responded with an out of character and rather snarky response of “Put up or Shut up”, it doesn’t change the fact that the public are now again calling for him to release his tax returns to stop the speculation once and for all.
In a purposeful move intended to get the public talking again about Romney’s tax rate Senator Reid claims that a conversation with an “trustworthy” Bain Capital investor has led to the allegations that Romney is not only paying a lower tax rate than many middle class Americans but that he is paying no taxes whatsoever. While members of Romney’s campaign as well as Romney himself have vehemently rebuked this remarks as “baseless and untrue” the fact remains that while the American people know Romney is a wealthy man we still have his taxes or where all of his income is derived from. Many in the GOP are again urging Romney to release his returns, the longer he holds out the more is favorable ratings with people begin to go down the drain.
As reports of another unnamed source steps forward the speculation will only begins to amplify louder, the protective roof that Romney has put up around his personal finances is about to collapse. While accusations without sources or “anonymous” sources are always questionable the fact remains that to rebut these attacks Romney has to come clean. To dive into the world of political metaphors, this election is a high stakes game of poker and Harry Reid has gone all in by saying Romney has paid zero taxes . Romney now must call his bluff and he can only do that by releasing his tax returns and prove once and for all that he has been paying at least some taxes in the last 10 years.
