Fact Checking the Second Presidential Debate
Washington Post - 10/17/2012
How do the statements made by presidential candidates in last night's debate line up? The Washington Post examines:
“I said I would cut taxes for middle- class families, and that’s what I’ve done, by $3,600.” — Obama
The $3,600 figure is actually over four years.
“Every middle-income taxpayer no longer will pay any tax on interest, dividends or capital gains.” — Romney
The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center says that such a tax cut will not greatly benefit middle income Americans, who typically do not have large stock investments. The people who really make money on capital gains earn far more than $200,000.
“He called the Arizona law a model for the nation.” —Obama, on immigration
As Romney later pointed out, he was speaking “E-Verify,” which is a federal electronic verification system that checks the immigration status of new hires.
“There were many days that passed before we knew whether this was a spontaneous demonstration, or actually whether it was a terrorist attack [in Libya]” --Romney
What did Obama say a day after the attack in Benghazi?
“No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for,” Obama said
