The GOP was hoping to reclaim a majority in the Senate but after remarks made by Republican favorite Todd Akin in Missouri many now fear that the majority may be out of reach. During an interview on a local Fox News channel, Akin was asked a question about abortion when he responded that "legitimate" rape victims don't get pregnant because the female body would prevent the pregnancy. Severe backlash ensued immediately after the comments many of which stemmed from his own base. Akin has since issued an apology stating that he "misspoke". This weak response has done little to sooth influential members of the party and indeed most have distanced themselves from Akin and conceded that the once likely Republican win is now in uneasy waters.
